The Steam Deck can be a convenient way to enjoy all sorts of games from a player’s library. After all, being able to play everything on the go is always a boon. But with the number of titles out there, identifying specific ones can be overwhelming. So on this week’s Siliconera Speech, we figured we’d share some of what we think are the best JRPGs on the Steam Deck and see what people recommend.
I mean, I don’t private a Steam Deck, but I think FFVII remake will be one of the best RPG to play on it. It’s a demanding game, and the handheld that can manage it is great! Other than that, this is the only viable way that you can play it essentially as Square Enix intended it to be on the go. After all, there is no Switch port. Plus, it’s a really fun re-imagining of FFVIIAnd give FFVII reborn, aka season 2, is being released, which could be a good way to catch up. — jenni
I thought of being cheeky and calling the Steam Deck’s best JRPG a “Nintendo Switch emulator,” but luckily Square Enix stepped in and revived one of my favorite games ever. : Ogre Reborn Tactics. Strategy game perfectly suited to play on handheld devices. It is a classic on the PSP and Vita, and it will continue to be a classic on the Steam Deck, or even the Switch, where it was also released. — Josh
The Steam Deck is great for two types of games: those that don’t yet have a port to switch to the Switch, and those that are a bit too heavy for existing Nintendo hardware. For the second category, the Steam Deck is likely the kind of “Switch Pro” that many have been complaining about in demand for a while. A great case study: Monster Hunter Story 2. The game is only available on PC and Switch, and it’s great on both, but it certainly benefits from a bit more graphical power on the Deck. As a reward? You could make the franchise’s platform list even more exotic, with the first game releasing only on 3DS and phones. — Graham
