I have a cage for my iPhone. But I was thinking about how I can use MagSafe instead of clamping it in every time I want to take a video. And now Moment has released the perfect MagSafe gear Mobile filmmaker cage. They sent one for me to test, and here are the results.
It is made of metal. The cage has a simple shape, but that’s exactly what it should be when you want to focus on what’s important. And it’s the details that push this to a professional level. There’s cable spacing, so your microphone or light’s power cable can fit snugly along the side of the cage and be unobstructed.
This cage costs $99, which isn’t cheap, but if you want to take professional-looking photos, buying the equipment should be an investment. This cage will stand the test of time.
What I like
The build quality is the best I’ve seen in a cell phone cage.
MagSafe is the ultimate addition to a mobile-first movie maker. You can keep your phone in the carrying case, and if you don’t have an iPhone, you can attach a docking adapter to convert any phone without MagSafe into a working solution.
It has two cold shoe racks and space to navigate cables so they don’t get in the way.
When you put the top handle of the cage, it can get you some great low-slope angles. If you’re using a newer iPhone, you’ll get even better stability than the iPhone has to offer. The top controllers that I would recommend are Smallrig top handle and Smallrig multi-function handle with cold shoe sole.
Another win is that you can remove the magnetic holder that holds the camera to attach it to a tripod, which gives you options.
What I don’t like
MagSafe is great, but every time you insert your phone, you have to make sure it’s straight. It’s not a decoy and much more convenient than any other mount I’ve had, but it’s something to look out for when you’re shooting. The magnets are super strong, so it’s not easy to knock it off, but the first setup is important. The cage also cannot be attached to a tripod.
Inference
Cage is a win if you are a mobile filmmaker. It will stabilize your shots, give you ways to hold the camera if you add a top grip, and it’s easy to get started with MagSafe.
