According to court documents, the man who allegedly steered his SUV into a parade in Wisconsin, killing five people and injuring 48 others, got out after allegedly running over a woman said she was the mother of his child.
Darrell E. Brooks, 39, of Milwaukee is the sole suspect in Sunday’s tragedy, Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said.
Brooks could be charged with five counts of attempted murder, and many more possible, Thompson said.
Now, some are wondering why Brooks was issued a $1,000 bond after allegedly manipulating a woman on Nov. 2 – an amount the district attorney’s office now calls “inappropriately low.”
Regarding the November 2 incident: According to the criminal complaint, Brooks allegedly drove a woman’s vehicle while she was walking through the parking lot of a gas station on Nov. 2. According to the criminal complaint, the woman is alleged by Brooks to be ran past his car during the November 2 incident telling authorities she was the mother of his child.
“Officers observed tire tracks on her left trouser leg,” the criminal complaint reads.
Prosecutors brought five charges related to the case including: obstructing an officer; the second degree recklessly jeopardizes safety with domestic abuse ratings; disorderly dealing with family abuse assessments; and lightweight battery with domestic abuse ratings.
Brooks was also charged with jumping bail because he had been released on bail following an incident from July 24, 2020, according to court documents.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office now says it should not have offered Brooks such a low bail and has conducted an internal review of the decision.
“The State’s bail offer in this case is disproportionately low due to the nature of the recent and pending charges against Mr Brooks,” the office said in a statement. .
“The bail recommendation in this case is not consistent with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office’s approach to matters involving violent crime, nor is it consistent with the defendant’s prior risk assessment when placing the guarantee money.”
CNN has reached out to Brooks’ attorney from the incident that occurred in 2020 and early November 2021 about the district attorney’s statement, but has yet to receive a response.
