BEIJING – U.S. men’s figure skater Vincent Zhou has tested positive for COVID-19 – putting his chances of winning another Olympic medal at risk.
“As part of a routine COVID-19 test yesterday, Vincent Zhou tested positive,” a US figure skating representative said in a statement. “Under the guidance of [U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee] medical staff, Zhou is conducting additional tests to confirm his condition. “
The announcement came the day US figure skater won a silver medal in the team competition. Zhou competed on Sunday in the team event as a substitute for three-time world champion Nathan Chen.
Zhou is expected to compete again on Tuesday in the men’s short show. If he comes back negative on subsequent COVID tests, Zhou can still compete.
Otherwise, he will be quarantined, like other athletes who have tested positive in Beijing, until he comes back negative on two consecutive PCR tests.
This is the second time the 21-year-old has appeared at the Winter Olympic Games. He competed in Pyeongchang in 2018, but didn’t win a medal.
