Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters details its malicious villains

Warhammer 40k has a bunch of interesting gods, and I must say that my favorite is Nurgle. He’s a big plague monster that brutally infects everything, and uh oh, he’s the big bad guy in the upcoming turn-based strategy RPG. Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters. The developers of Complex Games have released a new developer diary that talks about how his minions will bring plague across the land, and admittedly it looks pretty cool. But also: yuck!

So Nurgle uses a plague called Bloom to infect planets and transform his own forces to be stronger (and uglier). The developers say that, as part of the story, players will research how to get rid of Bloom – I think it’s good to do that it will evolve new strains as the campaign goes on.

“For example, a planet that can be infected by the stress of pain, tends to inflict higher damage spikes on enemies,” said senior programmer Dave Reimer. “Others can be infected by the stress of death, which tends to give enemies the ability to destroy your knights’ willpower.”

To combat this, you will be able to spend resources upgrading your weapons and armor for better Bloom resistance, or improving your ship so you can react faster to stave off disease. Translate. All of this will be especially important when it comes to tackling Nurgle’s champions, a bunch of big, stinky bosses. I’m a fan of the one in that vid that hit a stick in the ground causing trees to grow around it.

I’m eager to try more of Warhammer’s stuff. My main experience with Nurgle was in Vermintide 2’s Chaos Wastes, where he had buffs at certain levels that made your life incredibly difficult. There’s one that causes enemies to explode into clouds of gas, and another that fills the level with gas, and a player has to carry a stink-proof wand so you don’t die from it. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great idea for an evil god, even if those levels test my patience.

Daemonhunters was announced back in July in Games Workshop’s Warhammer Skulls Event, along with some other Warhammer-y stuff. It is being published by Frontier Foundry and will release sometime in 2022, and you can check it out On steam and Epic game store.
