The MX3 class is only in its sophomore year – and due to plague disruptions, it’s only the fifth event held for its kind since its inception. However, the depth of the fields, the quality of the racing and the talent on display is proof that reshaping the development class into its current format was the correct decision.
The young 13-18 year old shooters displayed incredible talent at Gum Valley, just seconds behind their more experienced colleagues in the other two divisions. The way they handled the tough layoff over the weekend was extremely impressive.
Again, the class was oversubscribed, with 51 entries meaning 11 unfortunate souls had to miss the main game. So the non-qualifiers have two consolation races of 12 minutes + one lap.
The opening Maxxis MX3 moto was dramatic before the race even started.
In the warm-up / aim, Sandgroper Brock Flynn (Husqvarna Racing) – who is second on the scoreboard behind Honda driver, Campbell Williams, takes the lead into this round – had a spectacular crash as he veered into the second downhill turn rife with brake bumps.
The Husky’s rear wheel bumped into one of those bumps clumsily sending the bike sideways, followed by another close collision by compressing the suspension, before it unloaded and relentlessly flung Flynn over. bars. The last acrobatic bike with the Flynn barrel rolled behind it about fifty yards down the hill before coming to a stop just outside the track limits.
Worryingly, he lay motionless in the fetal position for a long time before moving after being cared for by RaceSafe. Incredibly, he seemed to have shaken it all off and recounted, and returned to the starting gate, no doubt, his body still pumping with adrenaline.
The gates were then lowered and 40 riders charged into the ultrafast runner, the right leading into the proper circuit. It’s 14order fastest qualifier, Queenslander Ryan Alexanderson (Motorex KTM Factory Racing) pocketed the $100 Matrix Stands hole-punch to lead the teens in their 20 minutes + one heat lap.
Alexanderson, who finished sixth behind Wonthaggi, has Kayden Minear WA (KTM Junior Factory Team) close by with Conor Towil (KTM Newcastle) also having a good start to move up to second place ahead of Minear. However, Towil’s The key is short-lived as he makes a mistake that sends him to the field to eventually finish 15order.
Alexanderson extended his lead over Minear to four seconds in the fourth round and looked ready to test, but 14-year-old Minear was like a hound and wouldn’t give up, clinging to his feet and try to slowly cut the lead down to just one second when the pair is more than 20 seconds away from the rest.
Queenslander Jack Mather (Husqvarna), the second fastest in qualifying, had a moment in the opening round to drop to seventh, before rising to fourth in five laps behind title leader, Williams.
Williams didn’t have the best start and dropped to fifth, before replaying Mather for third and seemingly knocking out the leaders, but a three-round mistake at home sent the pair into disarray. swap positions when Mather scores that third.
While there were many position changes in the top 10, Minear ran out of laps to overhaul the leader, Alexanderson hit the second line ahead of Sandgroper and Mather in third by 30 seconds.
As for Flynn, he managed to complete six laps before the pain took control and forced him to retire, he went to the medic truck and took no further action after being transported to the hospital once. with suspected rib injury. . Considering the nature of the accident, he was lucky to get out with relatively minor injuries.

Maxxis MX3 Moto Two
Stage two of the Maxxis MX3 class was another excellent race where we saw a battle between two Western Australians far from home, having grown up together competing on the brutal sands of the West.
Minear won a hole-punch from Myles Gilmore (Yamaha) and the pair set up yo-yos against each other for 12 moto laps. Gilmore will come close, but Minear can’t be denied, holding on to cross the finish line ahead of each lap.
With a few laps to go, the gap between the lead pair was just over a second, and just when it looked like the end was imminent in the stands, Gilmore slowed on the final lap with a few slips and a few minutes for him to take second place, as Minear became the youngest winner in the MX3 race at just 14 years old.
The respect between couples is shown behind the checkered flag as they hold hands and talk about their duel.
Williams finished third for the entire race, but no point threatened the leaders as the gap increased from 3.6 seconds at the end of the opening lap, to almost half a minute at the end of the race.
