Virginia Racing Commission proposes 27 days of colonization
Following on from the record-setting thoroughbred racing season in 2021, races take place in the 2022 Open. Colony Downs The race meeting presented by Woodford Reserve was approved today at the Virginia Racing Commission meeting held at the New Kent circuit.
Race days will increase from 21 to 27 and average daily wallet funds will increase from $522,000 in 2021 to $600,000 expected in 2022.
The upcoming 9-week campaign will run from July 11 – September 7.
Race day schedules will reflect ’21 racing vehicles, with races on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1:30pm (EDT).
The very successful 2021 meets 21 race days and the average daily bet is $2,240,000. A total of $10.4 million in wallet funds were distributed and the average pitch size was 8.36 healthy starters per race.
Details on the 2022 fixture, including the 3rd Virginia Derby, will be announced in the coming weeks. Colonial Downs is home to the Clerk’s Field, the widest grass racing surface in the country, and a 1 1/4 mile dirt oval, second only to Belmont’s 1 1/2 mile track.
