Venture capital firms and major tech companies have poured billions of dollars into artificial intelligence technology, and that money has supported nearly 800,000 AI-related job openings across the United States last year. 2022, according to data collected by Stanford University’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute. .
Data presented in the Institute’s 2023 report AI Stats Reportaggregates information from across the industry on investment, employment, environmental impact, and ethical ramifications of AI use.
California is the top state for AI-related hiring with more than 142,000 positions posted in 2022, according to the report, citing data from Lightcast. California is the birthplace of MicrosoftOpenAI is supported, as are big tech companies with strong AI arms like Google And meta.
The most populous states like Texas, New York and Florida also top the rankings.
Hiring data shows that some regions that aren’t usually called big tech hubs have been weighing themselves down.
On average, 1.5% of job openings in any state are related to AI. But in Washington, DC, for example, nearly 3% of job postings are AI-related, nearly double the national average. Smaller states like Delaware (2.66%) and Arkansas (2.03%) are also well above the national average.
The report notes that academic collaboration in AI research has been dwarfed by private industry research. The US and China continue to lead in collaborative research, a relationship that has grown since 2010 but slowed into 2021.
