Video: How to make your own telephoto pinhole camera with a Pringles tube: Digital photography review

Before learning about the latest pinhole lens video, Sean from Fotodiox previously made DIY pinhole lens video. In that video, he transformed an ordinary camera body cap into a wide-angle pinhole lens by drilling a hole in the cap and gluing a small piece of metal with a small hole to the cap. It is a wide-angle pinhole lens because the distance from the pinhole to the image sensor is short. Instead, by taking a long tube, such as a Pringles tube, and attaching it to the camera, you will significantly increase the distance from the focal plane to the pinhole, thus creating a lens with focal length. longer.

For this build, you’ll need a ‘Grab n’ Go’ size can of Pringles, shorter than a regular Pringles can, a soda can, sewing needles, gaffer tape or black duct tape, a box cutter, scissors, then two rings. In this case, Sean uses a 67mm Sony E Fotodiox macro reverse dial and a 77-67mm step reduction ring. For step-by-step details, watch the video below.

Sean from Fotodiox has an E-mount camera, so those are the conversion rings he used. However, you can do the project for other cameras as long as you have the right adapter rings, including a 77-67mm adapter ring. With the Grab n’ Go Pringles lens, the pinhole lens is equivalent to about 140mm on a full-frame camera.

Sean said there are limitations to the setup. The image will be blurred. But again, it’s a pinhole lens. You don’t make your own pinhole lenses for breathtaking image quality. You will also need to shoot at a very high ISO or use a long exposure. With his Sony A7S II, Sean can even shoot video using high ISO during the day. ‘Is the video beautiful?’ Sean asked. ‘Is not.
