Victoria faces gas shortage as market regulator warns of further intervention
Iona gas storage facility drops to record low supply on high demand amid Victoria’s price cap
Associated Press of Australia
Tuesday, July 19, 2022 10.45 AESTAustralia’s Energy Regulator has warned Victoria is facing a gas shortage that could push the electricity market into a new crisis.
The Iona gas storage facility in Port Campbell has fallen to a record low supply due to high demand amid the state’s price cap.
In an industry letter released on Monday, Australians Energy The Market Operator (AEMO) warns of the risk of cuts during peak demand times.
“AEMO has determined that there is a possibility that market or operational responses may not be sufficient to mitigate the threat. AEMO is considering all other possible options before intervening,” it said.
Locard Energy, which owns Iona, said “unplanned shutdowns of coal power generation” and cold weather have boosted demand.
…
The state price cap remains at $40/gigajoule, as demand for gas continues to soar globally due to various factors including a significant drop in supply due to the war in Ukraine.
…
While acknowledging the energy grid is under pressure, the state’s deputy prime minister, Jacinta Allan, said Victoria is a net gas exporter and the latest AEMO advice is that the state has enough supply to meet demand. mine.

In 2021, Victoria made clear its green energy plans and hostile attitude towards gas extraction, by including a ban on cracking in the state constitution.
Victoria’s ban Permanent ban

The Andrews Labor Government has listened to farmers and communities in the area and banned jailbreaking in Victoria as well, following the ban in the state Constitution.
The Constitution Amendment Bill (Prohibition of Jailbreak) 2020 passed by the Senate and Victoria’s Constitution will now be amended, protecting our regions from the threat of activities that can harm the environment.
Fracking was banned in 2017 and at the 2018 election the Labor Government promised to put that ban in the Constitution – to make it more difficult for future Liberal and National governments to place the industry. our food and fiber at risk.
The onshore conventional gas field restart is underway on 1 July 2021. This restart follows three years of detailed scientific investigation by the Victoria Gas Program (VGP), shows that a conventional onshore gas industry would not affect the environment or our vital agricultural fields.
Conventional gas extraction does not involve fracturing – it is a tried and tested method of accessing gas deep underground trapped by an impermeable layer of rock.
South West Victoria and Gippsland are key beneficiaries, where geoscientific studies have identified traditional onshore gas sources with significant potential.
Onshore production of conventional gas sources is estimated to generate approximately $300 million annually for regional economies and create up to 6,400 jobs over the life of these projects.
Victorian regulations governing onshore conventional gas exploration are being improved based on the recommendations of the VGP’s independent advisory panel, which includes farmers, environmental groups, industry representatives and local councils direction. Public consultation on the new regulations will begin in April.
Quote from Minister of Natural Resources Jaclyn Symes
“No other government in the world has gone so far as to include coal seam gas and a mining ban in their constitution – but we are determined to make this a permanent decision.”
“We have listened to our rural communities, who have told us that they do not want the unacceptable risks that fracturing brings to the agricultural and our travel.”

Power sources are only useful if they can provide power when you need it.
One AEMO report published in March suggestions “… Victorian manufacturing capacity decline during the outlook period is also expected to reduce the resilience of the system. …”. Similar warnings are also found in Year 2021, Year 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017 reports, so the Victorian Government had plenty of advance warning that they had a problem. The Victorian Government’s response to these warnings is one more ban jailbreak forever into the Victorian constitution in 2021.
To be fair, AEMO doesn’t predict Victoria won’t start facing winter shortages until 2024, but it seems rather reckless to intentionally run the state’s energy supply close to the point. fail, when options are available to reduce stress.
Dan Andrews, Victoria’s prime minister who passed a constitutional amendment banning jailbreaks, was also prime minister last year ordered the police to shoot rubber bullets at unarmed workersin a vaccine proxy rally.
