Vergil Ortiz Jr has withdrawn from this Saturday’s game against Michael McKinson.
This 23-year-old Texan received her DAZN card within a few days at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles. However, illness forced the undefeated weight champion to withdraw after he was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis.
This condition is described as the breakdown of skeletal muscle caused by direct or indirect muscle injury and can lead to kidney damage. The severity of the problem is further emphasized as it can be dangerous or life-threatening.
Ortiz released a statement on social media earlier today revealing that he was hospitalized yesterday.
“For the past two weeks, I haven’t felt like myself,” he said.
“I just feel like my body is getting worse and worse and I don’t know why. My dad was also able to tell I wasn’t right and took me to the doctor. We did some tests and the doctor concluded that I have rhabdomyolysis. Yesterday I was hospitalized and had to stay overnight. It could have been a lot worse and I’m grateful we caught up in time.
“And of course sorry Michael McKinson. I’m sure you’ve worked your ass out; We are just fighting trying to provide for our family. I hope you still have a chance to fight.”
So far there has been no official word on whether McKinson will continue to fight or the card will continue but the Matchroom weightlifter has shared his disappointment at the news of the withdrawal.
McKinson said on Twitter: “I’m so sorry.
“First of all I want to wish Vergil Ortiz a speedy recovery. I have UK fans traveling and I’ve been working really hard. So the replacement is now only for Golden Boy Promotion, Matchroom Boxing, MTK Global. ”
