Usyk names the only other fight he cares about other than rage
Oleksandr Usyk has returned to Ukraine, but he’s still making headlines around the world. During a recent press conference, he named another man he would consider facing in the ring if his fight with Tyson Fury didn’t materialize.
The Ukrainian, who retained his unified heavyweight title with an impressive win over Anthony Joshua, has made it clear that his goal is undisputed in the tournament. In fact, he went as far as to say that if he can’t fight Tyson Fury, he doesn’t want to fight at all.
That was right after his battle with AJ, but now that he’s had time to think again, it looks like he’ll consider putting on gloves for another heavyweight. He revealed his name in the press conference, as reported by The Mirror.
“We’ll see. I don’t want to make empty statements. Listen, I just don’t care… I can still box with Tyson Fury or with [Deontay] Wilder, but that’s where my interest ended. “
“That won’t happen this year, that’s for sure. As I said earlier to the press, I am completely healthy and do not have any injuries, but I have an old injury that has recurred and needs to be treated. It will take me two months to recover.”
With Deontay Wilder without a title – the WBC belt that was once his is now held by Fury – one could assume that Usyk simply enjoys the challenge.
There’s no doubt it will be an intriguing fight – one is the master boxer and the other owns the final equalizer.
With New information from Fury about a potential fight this year against an unknown opponent, and Wilder lined up to face Robert Helenius on October 15, it looks like the heavyweight division will be over until Usyk is ready to return to the ring next year.
Fans will certainly be hoping to see the two champions meet for the undisputed crown, but the idea of a Usyk-Wilder duel is certainly not a bad alternative.
