Southern California sporting director Mike Bohn has resigned.
USC confirmed the resignation of Bohn, 62, on Friday, about three and a half years after he succeeded Lynn Swann in the senior job.
Trojan’s sports division enjoyed tremendous success during Bohn’s tenure, marked by USC’s wise decision to move to the Big Ten in 2024.
Bohn’s time at USC will be best remembered for the way he helped restore the Trojans to a national power by luring famed head coach Lincoln Riley away. Oklahoma State at the end of the 2021 college football season.
The USC football team that struggled for a year has made a dramatic comeback from a year of national title contention after recruiting coach Riley last year, while the men’s basketball team has made three appearances in the Championship. competed in the NCAA in a row under coach Andy Enfield and recently signed two of the top performers. critically acclaimed rookie in show history in Isaiah Collier and Bronny James, son of LeBron James.
IN Letter to Alumni and SchoolUSC President Carol Folt briefly thanked Bohn for his service “in a time of rapid transformation and growth.”
“Over the past four years, USC athletics has transformed into a national powerhouse,” Folt writes. “In our pursuit of excellence, I am committed to ensuring that we have the right leadership to achieve our goals. As part of that commitment and as we prepare to transition Moving on to the Big Ten, we undertook a thorough review of athletics, including its practices, culture and strategy.Having built a solid foundation over the past few years, now is the time to take stock. new direction based on our values and the expertise needed to realize our aspirational vision for Troy athletics.”
Bohn mentioned “ongoing health challenges” in a statement given to the Los Angeles Times about his resignation, but did not give a clear reason for the surprising move.
He also alluded to the challenges of leading USC through the coronavirus pandemic in his statement.
“I will always be proud to have led the program through the most tumultuous times in the history of the industry and at USC with a restored reputation and significant national achievements,” said Bohn. “As an alumnus-athlete myself, my purpose and identity is rooted in supporting young people as they pursue their sporting, academic and personal goals. I’ve been lucky I’ve been blessed with so many great opportunities and met so many great people, and I leave wishing the very best for everyone I’ve worked with and served with. The important thing right now is for me to focus on being with my precious family, dealing with ongoing health challenges, and thinking about how I can become influential in the future.”
Bohn is a former sporting director at Idaho, State of San Diego, Colorado And Cincinnati. He left the Bearcats to take over a USC division that has struggled with years of scandal and NCAA sanctions while being led by a host of former USC football players with little management experience.
Veteran administrators mostly appear to put the Trojans back on the path to success. With the men’s soccer and basketball team making significant progress, Bohn hired experienced coach Lindsay Gottlieb from Cleveland Cavaliers to lead the women’s basketball team, which hit a nine-game winning streak and made it to the NCAA Tournament this spring in Gottlieb’s sophomore season. USC’s baseball team is also going through a rehab season under highly-rated new head coach Andy Stankiewicz, whom Bohn drew from Grand Canyon University last year.
Bohn also told ESPN that the breakup was “friendly” between him and the school.
