Electric vehicle sales are at record levels both in California and nationally, according to figures released by the California Energy Commission and interpreted by the electric vehicle advocacy organization Veloz last week.
And again, they are led by Tesla — by an amazing lead, though a series of rallies. Californians bought more than one-sixth of the Teslas sold globally (one even bigger than last quarter), and Tesla accounts for 10.6% of the California light vehicle market. Nationally, Americans bought about 208,000 electric vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) in the first quarter of the year. California includes 81,292 of those, or about 40% of US plug-in sales.

For California, that’s up 37% (and about 15,000 vehicles higher) from last year at this point. Veloz notes that at the Golden State there is now more than 16% market share for electric vehicles, which again includes PHEVs. That’s basically a doubling of the market share for plug-ins there since the same quarter of 2020.
According to Veloz, the company has been tallying electric vehicle sales since late 2010 and the arrival of the Nissan Leaf, which has now grown to a cumulative total of 2.64 million in nationwide sales and nearly 1.14 million. cumulative sales in California.
In California, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y topped the sales charts, with 24,375 and 23,117 respectively.
