Toyo Open Country A/T 3 is now available in Malaysia – off-road tires for SUVs, 4x4s and trucks; 14 sizes; from RM500
in Launch of Proxes Sport 2 at Awana last weekend, Toyo Malaysia also launched Toyo Open Country A/T III (OPAT3) locally. OPAT3 is an off-road tire for SUVs, 4x4s and trucks, and this latest generation features increased side grooves for improved off-road traction in extreme conditions.
The OPAT3 effectively replaces the Open Country A/T Plus and the main area of improvement is dry handling, with a slight increase in off-road traction. Interestingly, Toyo’s cobweb graph shows a slight increase in noise, but if you’re taking the A/T route you might have accounted for a noisier ride and since nothing is free that’s it. could be the price to pay for the many handling improvements on the road.
Speaking of which, the Japanese tire manufacturer says that OPAT3’s traction index in the contact area is significantly increased by 41% compared to OP Plus. Traction index is calculated from pattern factors that create traction in the contact area between the tire and the surface.
All thanks to the new tread pattern design, which features a ‘variable five pitch profile’ (low pattern noise), staggered shoulder lugs (better off-road traction) and rock thrusters (protection from damage caused by rock drilling).
There is also a large traction block. If you zoom in on bunga, you’ll see zigzag blocks and zigzag tracks – the former delivers improved traction from edge effects, while the latter boosts off-road performance. Equally important in terms of off-road grip are the OPAT3’s square shoulders and exposed bite edges.
Toyo’s latest A/T tires – fitted on Mitsubishi Triton and New Toyota Hilux GR Sport at the event – also features what the company calls a pedestal design on the sidewalls for better durability and protection against external damage. Open Country A/T III is available in 14 sizes, ranging from 15 to 20 inches. The price range is from RM500 to RM1,200 per piece.
