US EV fast charger growth is accelerating, filling flyovers

According to a report, the US currently has nearly 8,200 public DC fast charging stations, filling in the gaps on the road map. Bloomberg’s new report.

According to the report, the number of public fast chargers increased 7.6% in the first quarter of 2024, driven by the government’s $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program Biden administration, according to reports. The report found that this huge growth means there is now one fast charger for every 15 gas stations in the US.

According to the report, charging infrastructure is also expanding beyond traditional coastal EV strongholds. Indiana added 16 new fast charging stations between January and April, while Missouri and Tennessee each added 13 stations, and Alabama added 11 stations. And Ohio declared first Install NEVI nationwide in December 2023.

Bloomberg notes that the additional charging stations in flyover country are due in part to convenience stores like Buc-ee’s and Wawa getting involved in charging. The two chains added 19 new charging stations in the first three months of 2024.

A study last year by mapping data company HERE suggests that identifying the state of being leading or lagging Charging the battery may not be as simple as it seems. Instead, it’s partly to do with the size of their electric vehicle fleet as well as the location of the chargers in relation to that and where they’re going. Furthermore, the Department of Energy still has one of the best tools—the “Designated Alternative Fuel Corridors” map—to predict the future of EV fast charging can be filled in.

Meet the federal goals set and required by the program The stations are 50 miles apart along major corridors, more than 1,100 fast charging stations will be needed nationwide, according to a Great Plains Institute report last year. And that’s without considering other ambitious electric vehicle charging network efforts, like Ionna—or the development of Tesla Supercharging.
