United Air Wants Electric VTOL Flying Taxi in Chicago by 2025

Clear, Flying cars are the future of personal transportation and, one day, we will all fly through the sky to get from A to B with ease. But as it stands, No flying car really exists yetso we have to do with startups around the world that promise to build new all-electric aircraft with vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) capabilities, and call them flying taxis. Such a concept was adopted by unified airlineplanning to release first commercial flying taxi service Start from 2025.

In case you lost it:

To launch its new service, United has in partnership with the start-up Archer Aviationplan to take it eVTOL craft into production next year. The airline has so far spent $1 billion on orders for Archer Midnight, see herepromise a range of up to 60 miles and a top speed of 150 mph.

Currently, Flower AAirlines outlined its plans for the new plane it hopes to use on a “flying taxi” service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Chicago’s Vertiport, an eVTOL base near the city’s medical district .

When service, first covered by Ars Technica, launching in 2025, United says the journey time between downtown Chicago and the airport will take “about 10 minutes.” In contrast, the same trip by car today can take more than an hour.

In a press release, Michael Leskinen, president of United Airlines Ventures, said that the new service will offer travelers “a more sustainable, convenient and cost-effective mode of transportation”.

Those sentiments were echoed by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who said the initiative “paves the way to a more sustainable future for our state, nation, and world.” Noble statement from both, here.

As it stands, United says The service will launch in 2025 as an experiment that could one day be extended to connect other local communities.

But there’s one big hurdle to overcome before United’s dream of a flying taxi service can become a reality: Archer Midnight needs to make it a reality. off the page and into the real world.

Currently, the company hopes to put its craft into production by 2024. To achieve that goal, the company has signed a partnership with Stellantis, of all companiesWhere is the car manufacturer? will act as the “exclusive contract manufacturer” for the eVTOL craft.

Archer said it plans to build the first plane by the fourth quarter of this year, before working with the Federal Aviation Administration to obtain certification for the plane..

Once all of that happens, Archer hopes to began crafting their own at a facility in Covington, Georgia, before United commissioned them. Do you think it will manage all that before the end of 2025?
