The United Nations Commission on Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea and partners Global ocean announced hybrid celebration of United Nations World Oceans Day 2024, held live at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and broadcast live. This year’s event will take place on Friday, June 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. EDT (although the official United Nations designated date for World Oceans Day remains June 8). 6, the next day).
Here’s what the host had to say about this year’s theme, “Awakening New Depths”:
The ocean sustains humanity and all life on earth. However, although we are completely dependent on it, we have only explored ~10%. Although we know little about the ocean relative to its vastness, what we do know is that the consequences of our actions are evident throughout its waters. Knowledge of the dire state of the ocean is clear. Yet every year humanity continues to make shallow and short-sighted decisions that increase the likelihood of the ocean’s demise as well as our own.
We don’t have time for “out of sight, out of mind”. Our relationship with the ocean needs urgent change and our efforts to date have only scratched the surface. To create momentum for ocean expansion, we need to awaken new depths.
The United Nations World Oceans Day 2024 will explore new depths of understanding, compassion, collaboration and commitment in themes including: Science & Innovation; Capacity building, Biodiversity; Exploration & Discovery; Nexus X Climate; and Indigenous, traditional and local community knowledge.
