Trueno-inspired GR86 leads Toyota’s GR special editions in 2024

Toyota’s GR series is in a pretty solid position right now. The GR86, corolla And super takes up most of the enthusiast space at a reasonable price, so all that’s really left to do is keep the models fresh with the up-to-date listings and essential special editions. Toyota treated us to three days today, arriving in late 2023.

Let’s start with the most interesting of the trio, which is also the rarest and potentially the most affordable. The GR86 Trueno Edition comes in either white or red, with black decals that pay homage to the original Corolla AE86. It also comes with a new performance package that includes Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers, which will be optional on non-special versions. Toyota only produced 860 of these, in automatic and self-shifting form. Prices will arrive later this year before shipping around winter.

The car is adorned with Trueno badging and a new black metal finish for the 18-inch wheels comes standard on the Premium. Existing GR86 owners will be happy to know that they can also retrofit the performance kit to any existing 2022 or 2023 model, as long as they have 18-inch wheels in all corners. With the upcoming 2024 cars, Toyota’s active safety suite will also be available standard with manual transmission for the first time.

Moving up the range there’s the GR Corolla, which gets a new blue colorway for the Circuit Edition back and the addition of 18-inch forged wheels that are, like Morizo already, standard for that trim. The changes here are understandably less obvious as the hot hatch is entering but are only the second model year. That said, minor upgrades have been made under the skin, according to Toyota’s release:

Modifications for the GR Corolla Circuit 2024 Edition include new ribbed flange bolts that attach the steering gearbox to the front suspension subframe and flange bolts with a 2 mm wider head (approximately 0.08 in. ) to attach the rear suspension to the subframe. An unpainted pin now connects the battery to the frame for direct metal-to-metal contact.

Once again Toyota kept Circuit Edition production low, at just 1,600 units. Finally, never to be left out, Supra is also getting some love on the occasion of its 45th anniversary. The automaker will build only 900 units equipped with what is essentially the appearance package, plus the addition of a small, hand-adjustable spoiler. As with the GR86 Trueno, the 45th anniversary flagship will be offered with both a new 6-speed manual transmission as well as an 8-speed automatic transmission when it reaches owners in the fall.

One final detail that sim racers in the audience will surely appreciate: the GR Corolla will “debut virtual” in Gran Turismo 7, the manufacturer also announced today. With Toyota and GT developer Polyphony Digital’s close relationship, it’s only a matter of time before the car joins 86, Yaris and Supra in the latest installment of Real Driving Simulator. A timeline for the hatch’s arrival hasn’t been shared, though these are usually announced pretty close to the release date, so we shouldn’t have to wait too long.
