Travel to see the Northern Lights: Norwegian flights for under $400

In winter, many people travel to warm places to escape the cold while others hop on planes to reach new slopes on a ski trip. How about checking an item on the bucket list like catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights? Winter is perfect timing for this adventure because the night is longer and the sky is darker.

Norway is a great place to see the aurora and now have some great deals for Oslo which has had some very low fares this year as cheap flights between the US and Oslo became available due to the accession of some low-cost airlines in the market.

Price to Oslo as low as $322 out of New York City on a budget airline like north Atlantic, with a stop at London Gatwick Airport (LGW) en route. There are also options on some airlines such as British Airways, KLM, Air France and TAP among others.

Watching a spectacular light show in the sky is just one reason to visit Norway, and it takes some extra planning to get there from Oslo, in the south of the country. If you’re venturing north of the Arctic Circle, you’ll need extra transportation.

In addition to rail options, your journey north can be as simple as an additional short flight to a northern village like Tromso; we found flights on a budget airline for as little as $100 round-trip in early 2023.

However, even if you’re just looking for an excuse to see what Norway is like in winter and plan to stay closer to Oslo, this November-March deal is a great way to go. .

You can certainly find great base fares when flying with a low-cost airline, although you should check fees before you fly and consider elite status or credit card related benefits you may prefer to fly with an airline that is a partner with the US carrier of your choice, this may reduce some of your flying ancillary costs and may allow you to keep some travel privileges during your trip.

Let’s start with a journey that people who travel in New York SkyTeam Partners may want to consider. You can get a round trip right in the middle of winter on a combined Air France, KLM and Delta flight for $394.

Departing John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in mid-January on an Air France Boeing 777, you will arrive in Paris the next day and continue to Oslo after a 90-minute stopover. On the return trip, your first leg is on board the KLM and you’ll head back to New York on Delta’s Airbus A330 after a 90-minute break in Amsterdam.

Here’s another cheap option departing from the East Coast: A round trip out of the Washington, DC area on board Icelandair. Departing from Dulles International Airport (IAD) on a Boeing 737MAX, you’ll make a short 75-minute stop at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in Iceland, before continuing on to Oslo for a final 2-hour flight. 45 minutes with a similar route on the return trip.

You’ll pay a little more when leaving the West Coast, but not more. We found itineraries for as little as $433 from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Oneworld airline Finnair. Departing around dinner time from LAX, it was a 10.5-hour flight to Helsinki Airport (HEL) on an Airbus A350. After a really brief 45-minute stopover, you’ll begin the final short leg of your trip to Oslo. Your stop in Helsinki is a bit longer (4 hours 50 minutes) on the return trip, although you can find shorter trips.
