Toyota is recalling some 2021 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid to solve the problem that can cause the car to stall in cold weather.
Affected vehicles have hybrid system software that can trigger powertrain shutdown when driving in EV mode in cold temperatures “if the accelerator is pressed rapidly to accelerate the vehicle further,” according to a report from the Bureau. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, that depends on “battery parameters and vehicle operating modes at the time,” the report said.

NHTSA said the recall covers 16,679 vehicles, but not all of them are sold in the United States. The number of recalls is based on the production period in which the software in question was installed during that period.
So while this issue seems to apply to a very specific group of conditions and vehicles, Toyota remains cautious. Dealers will install the updated software for free. Starting February 27, Toyota is expected to start sending out letters detailing when to set up appointments.
