reception Morning version This week has given me the pleasure of talking with Paul Janeway, frontman of the soul band St. Paul and the Broken Bones. I’ve been following them for over a decade after my friend, Birmingham Restaurant owner Pardis Stitttell me about a rising local band

Janeway grew up in a rural Alabama town where the church was the focal point. He always dreamed of being a preacher but turned out to be a singer-songwriter. I think watching him perform live is almost like being in a church. “It’s a lot more like accepting the church and loving the church,” he said. “And many more curses.”

He wrote several songs for the band’s new album,”Angels in Science Fiction“after he learned he was about to become a father during the pandemic. The music is subtler and more reflective than the raucous soul for which the eight-member band is famous. Janeway says it’s the closest they’re going to be. achieve a folk record.
