Tips for Getting an Appointment Global Entry When Not Available

Like other Trusted Traveler programs, Global Entry requires new users to submit online applicationfollowed by a Interview. The problem some people have is that getting a coveted Global Entry interview spot is sometimes easier said than done.

Conditionally approved applicants, including those renewing their Global Entry at expiration, may be eligible to skip the interview part of the process but seems to be lucky for those asked for a re-interview on renewal and who wasn’t.

For those who need an interview, getting an appointment can be anything from difficult to nearly impossible. This is possible thanks to a continuous backlog Created by enrollment centers that were closed for a long time during the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in tourists wanting to travel internationally, coupled with staffing shortages.

In my own experience last year, I had to wait four months to find a Global Entry interview appointment at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD). And in some locations, things can be worse than that, completely unavailable until the end of the schedule.

But all is not lost in your quest to get through the airport faster with Global Entry. Read on for tips on securing an appointment.

Search Global Entry appointments by date

When I couldn’t initially find an appointment at O’Hare, I searched many other locations for availability, including in neighboring states and states not close to where I live. If you are flexible and travel a lot, consider going to a nearby enrollment center. In that case, it may be worth looking for the earliest available appointment rather than fixing on the most convenient location.

Therefore, I recommend that you regularly check the online tool, if possible, for last minute openings due to cancellations. That’s exactly how I got an appointment for my application – I happened to check in on the morning of December 15 and found an open position in Chicago for December 30.
