Place in Hexham currently heavy and although the track is currently in excellent condition, it will be the tagline for many of the horses there on Wednesday. Coach Russell Ross is 0/45 in his career which is a huge negative but this is the first time he has had the service of Brian Hughes which is exciting. He will ride a 10 year old Tintern Theater, who is rated higher than the fence, so he looks extremely well treated when he crosses the fence on his return and likes mud. The 10-year-old was not beaten that far when he finished third in a sales hurdle at Taunton in his final start for Nigel Twiston-Davies back in March.
12.50 Hexham
Cudgel has a reading of 521112 on heavy ground so there’s no doubt about his credentials when the mud is flying and he must really be the favorites for this race. All three of his career wins also came at this venue and although he took 223 days out to get through, he was still fresh. He ticks nearly all the boxes when he returns to action and it should come as no surprise to see him eat a well-backed hotpot meal.
1.50 Hexham
Without Conviction was placed in two heavy ground bumpers and still has very low mileage on the clock. The six-year-old mare looks poised to strike for the in-form Lucinda Russell yard. She was third here over 2m last month off 1lb higher, doing best work at the finish so the step up in trip will massively suit.
