Three Chimneys’ Volatile Gets Off to a Good Start at Saratoga

Of the early season horse breed Evaporation six winners in 20 starts, two of whom came Saratoga Race Track—a small but encouraging sample for Three Chimneys, where the son of Violence equivalent to $15,000.

“It’s really interesting for a horse that’s super fast but not particularly smart,” said Chris Baker, COO of Three Chimneys. “His 2-year-olds are doing it in the right places before they sell.”

Three Chimneys’s Horse Breed Reliable source from the unraced mare Broken Vow Repeat is Volatile’s latest winner, winning the first special weight class on July 28 at Saratoga Race Track 2 1/2 lengths. Bred by Three Chimneys and now trained by Steve Asmussen, Reliable Source was priced at $250,000 by RNA at last year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

“We liked her enough that if someone wanted to buy her from us, they would have to price her much higher than we were pricing her,” Baker explains. “When that didn’t happen in September, we were happy to put her in training. She’s healthy and she’s from the first stallion we believe in. She’s a mare that’s proven to produce good runners from a lot of different stallions, so it was a pretty easy choice. I think the market likes her, but probably not as much as we do. With a stud fee of $17,500, $250,000 is a lot of money. A price ten times the stud fee would make a lot of people say, ‘Yeah, I’ll go out.’”

Incentive Pay Wins First at Saratoga

“(Trainer Chad Brown) works really hard on Books 1 and 2 at Keeneland, and sometimes when we don’t find everything we want, he tells me to call him if he sees anything later in the sale,” Bradley said. “I called him about three horses in Book 3, and he looked at them and said, ‘Let’s try this one.'”

Bred in Kentucky by Kathryn Nikkel, Old Dominion and Turtle Creek Farms, Incentive Pay is distributed by Four Star Sales.

“Did you see him in the paddock?” Bradley asked after the race. “He was the same at the auction, too, take it easy. The horses in Book 3 are especially well-shown, and he showed class the whole time.

“He’s beautiful and fit,” Bradley continued, “and looks like a horse that can run two laps.”

“Buying offspring of early season stallions has been a successful approach for Seth and I,” Brown said, referring to owner Seth Klarman. “Both of our Preakness winners were offspring of early season stallions.”

Brown and Klarman won the 2017 Preakness (G1) with Cloud computing owned in partnership with William Lawrence, from the first crop Maclean’s Music and repeated in 2022 with Early voting from Gunman first crop. Gun Runner is also available at Three Chimneys, for a separate fee.

“Buying offspring from early season stallions fits Seth’s approach to buying horses and building his portfolio,” Brown said. “He likes to look for value. He’s not looking for a million-dollar, top-of-the-line horse. That’s not in our plans. Typically, good individuals from early season stallions present opportunities in our price range.”

Brown also notes that Bradley and Nick de Meric, who provided early training for Incentive Pay, were responsible for connecting him with Klarman.

Saratoga winner Volatile provides impressive updates to the gray/roan colt offered at this week’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. Bred by Three Chimneys Farm, the horse is a descendant of the mare Smart Strike. Bush Pilot and is the half-brother of the millionaire who won first prize. gun pilot who Baker said is expected to run in the Forego Stakes (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 24. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency as Hip 240, the horse earned an A+ rating in a preview of BloodHorse’s Auction Edge sale.

“Volatile has been very consistent in all his books,” Baker said. “He has pretty good numbers from different demographics of mares, and he throws well, is accurate, looks physically healthy. His foals are good spirited and easy to handle.

“Now it seems like some of that consistent look is consistent with athletic performance,” he continued, “and that’s what he really needs.”
