‘This is a dumb road’: Urban explorers talk about the deadly risks of Subculture

The artist and urban explorer known as Slippn fell for six stories and turned her back on her art. Despite the startling images urban explorers can usually receive, she is now warning others of the danger.

Urban discovery is a relatively recent phenomenon, at least digitally and on social media platforms. It involves exploring abandoned or off-limits locations, including construction sites, and documenting adventures, often at night. When everything goes according to plan, some images can be astounding, such as the silhouette of a person standing on a crane overhead in the cityscape in the beautiful night lights. But when things don’t go well, they can go very wrong, and they did Slippn, falling six stories from a building and breaking her back. Now, she is warning the others of risks.

I recently posted an article here on Fstoppers about a former professional surfer who nearly tripped after a fall while trying to take a photo. It was his last post on Instagram, so I don’t know how things have evolved since then. Unfortunately, falls and deaths like this are becoming all too common, simply because of a photo or a few likes from strangers on social media. As I said last time, please let these be timely reminders that no photo is worth risking your life for.
