Original article [Fri 12th Aug, 2022 11:15 BST]: There is no definite news about a Star Fox games on Switch and Nintendo fans are increasingly restless. No more has this been the case than modder KandoWontu, who is nearing completion of work on ‘Star Fox Exploration Showcase’, a mod for the 16-bit classic SNES that not only attempts to adapt the original game, but also builds completely new structures to it including new levels, ships, weapons and (yes, you guessed it) a fully functional multiplayer mode.
Just what does it take to get this iconic game code in the first place, and when will we be able to use it? Jack Yarwood visits our new sister site, Time extensiongot a chance to sit down with KandoWontu to learn all this and more.
The modder’s original plan was to just add Star fox, fox 2The mode features all the special ranges of the mode as well as some cool new camera mechanics from fellow modder, Starxxon (homelyright?) However, it seems that KandoWontu’s hunger is much greater, as he said in the interview:
Then I thought why not make the ships mutable? And weapons? And before you know it, I’ve added new features and hidden code.
In our opinion, these new features are the most exciting part of the mod and there is a lot more that is being added. “At this point,” said KandoWontu, “I have added a full second map with the original intact and still playable, the new map has 3 new courses, a secret level, a picture New backgrounds/enemies/boss/music and more! ‘
Now it has come to the point where ‘more’ feels somewhat like an understatement. The list of newly added features includes a full pre-game mod menu, two-player modes, new ships and weapons, a New Game+ feature, and more (see original article for the complete list).
However, playability always seems to be at the forefront of KandoWontu’s mind, and so he added a fully functional toggle menu to the game, allowing you to jump in and change mods. optional. As you can see from the photos above, a bunch of options look serious impressive.
The modding isn’t without its challenges – especially the annoying multiplayer mode – but KandoWontu made it through with a little help from his friends. Talk to Jack, he listed a full team of other modders (including SegaRetro92phonymike, livvy94, MrL314, EuclidiumSunlitspace542, chuckborrisnorris and Random content) are integral to various aspects of the project, from texture to musical composition. It makes sense when it comes to Star Fox, winning is a team effort.
KandoWontu previously stated that the Star Fox Exploration Showcase would be available at the end of August, but as the project has grown exponentially, the date has been pushed back to the end of October. You will be able to get the new code. Advanced here when it works (though keep in mind you’ll need a legal copy of the original ROM to play it).
