‘They didn’t stand a chance’: Two officers killed and 5 injured after gunman opened fire | US News
Two police officers were killed and five injured after a man allegedly opened fire on them as they tried to investigate a domestic violence complaint.
According to John Hunt, the police chief of Floyd County, a rural area of Kentucky in the US, a police dog – was also killed in the hour-long shooting.
“They didn’t stand a chance,” he said of the officers, adding that they were met with “fresh hell” upon arrival at the scene.
Mr. Hunt said the four congressmen went to the home to serve the court order issued on Thursday.
After being fired, they called for help.
State police arrived and the man surrendered after his family entered the negotiations.
Mr Hunt said that one of his deputies, William Petry, was killed along with Prestonsburg Police Captain Ralph Frasure, a 39-year law enforcement veteran.
Another Prestonsburg officer, Jacob Chaffins, is in hospital, while the other injured officers have not been named.
Lance Storz, 49, was arrested late Thursday and appeared in court Friday morning, pleading not guilty to two counts of killing a police officer.
He also faces another count of willful murder and one count of assaulting a service animal.
Court papers say Storz used a rifle to fire multiple shots at officers at his home on Main Street in the town of Allen.
‘Unthinkable heroism and sacrifice’
Attorney General Daniel Cameron said on social media that he was “deeply heartbroken to learn of the deaths of two law enforcement officers”.
“Our law enforcement displayed unthinkable heroism and sacrifice last night in the face of evil,” he added.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said on social media: ” Floyd County and our brave first responders suffered a tragic loss last night.
“I would like to call on all of Kentucky to join me in praying for this community.
“This is a difficult morning for our commonwealth.”
