BEIJING — The United States is pushing back against the idea of wanting to crack down on China and says it does not want to decouple the two economies, according to comments from a State Department spokesman.
The spokesperson responded to CNBC’s request for comment on Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang’s remarks on Tuesday. Qin claimed the US call for “establishing protective barriers” to the relationship meant that China should not react.
Qin also said that The US needs to “step on the brake” to prevent conflict with China
“We have made it clear that we are not seeking to contain China or have a new Cold War,” a State Department spokesman said.
The spokesperson pointed to comments made by Secretary of State Antony Blinken last year that the United States was not seeking to stop China’s economic development or “advance the interests of its people.”
“He also said that we don’t want to cut off the Chinese economy from ours, even though China is pursuing asymmetric decoupling,” the spokesman said.
