A seriously ill dog was found distressed on a dirt road in Oropos, Greece. The dog had been abandoned and malnourished for a long time and was suffering from a severe infectious scab that caused its skin to become scaly and hard as a rock. Save A Greek Stray has named the girl they rescued as Petra, the Greek word for “stone”.

At the vet’s office, Petra’s cutting-edge mange set caught the attention of caregivers worried about her condition. After conducting tests, they discovered that she was also suffering from leishmaniasis, Ehrlichia and other health problems. Sadly, Petra has long since lost all hope and no longer trusts humans. She just wished for her miserable life to end.
After Petra’s story went viral on social media, Valia Orfanidou, a canine rehabilitation specialist, stepped in to help Petra recover and regain her strength. Valia realized that more than medicine, Petra needed love and unwavering attention from everyone. The video below captures Petra’s progress as she recovers and transforms into a beautiful, adorable, and mischievous dog!

Update: We learned that Petra was adopted by a kind woman named Laura! Laura likes to call her “The Girl Who Beats Death” and hopes to give her all the finer comforts in life that Petra never had. We are so proud of you, Petra! Useful life! It is caring organizations and amazing people around the world that have put the time and effort into saving these dogs and all the animals in need!
