The Subroto Cup returns after two years; starting on September 6

The Subroto Cup international soccer tournament will return after a two-year hiatus and will take place in New Delhi from September 6 to October 13.

The Subroto Cup – organized by the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Association (SMSES) and the Indian Air Force – is a prestigious international interscholastic football tournament, held annually in New Delhi.

The tournament will be conducted in three categories:

Young Men (Under 14 years old): September 6 – September 15

Girls (Under 17 years old): September 19 – September 28

Boys (Under 17 years old): October 3 – October 22

A total prize pool of more than 230,000 rupees was given to three categories for winners and runner-ups.

Other cash prizes include prizes for the semi-final, quarter-final, Fair Play, Best Player, Best Goalkeeper, Best Coach and Best School.

In addition, a selection panel consisting of outstanding players will select 25 outstanding players in each category to award scholarships.

All selected players will be awarded a scholarship (one-time grant) Rs. 25,000 in the Young Boys and Girls categories and Rs. 15000 for the Young Men category.

Named after Indian Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, the tournament – which began in 1960 – was temporarily suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament has been a stepping stone for several former Indian football legends such as Shyam Thapa and Bhaichung Bhutia.

International legends such as Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos (both 2016) and Pele (2015), have attended the tournament as Guest of Honor in its previous editions.

“With boundless happiness, we share the news of the resumption of the Subroto Cup, a sign in the advancement of football at the pitch level in this country… We wish all the participating teams, all the best,” said Wing Commander Yashwant Singh Panghal, Honorary General Secretary of SMSES.

The 61st edition of the tournament will be held at four different venues this year namely Dr BR Ambedkar Stadium (Delhi Gate), Tejas Football Stadium (Race Circuit), Subroto Park and Jawaharlal Stadium Nehru.

About 85 different school teams representing their respective states are expected to take part in one of the most important interscholastic competitions in Asia. A school from Bangladesh has also confirmed its participation in the competition.
