The spinoff technology allowed Providence to grow from building three new app features per year to 40

Providence is a health system headquartered in Renton, Washington. Announced in October, the Praia Health platform will originate from Providence after acquiring its first customer outside of Providence and more than a dozen digital health partners joining Praia’s digital ecosystem. Providence operates 52 hospitals and 800 clinics across seven states – Alaska, Montana, Oregon, Washington, California, New Mexico and Texas.

Praia Health markets a digital health platform. This is the story of Praia Health and its innovative technology.

PROBLEM

While the strategic approach has been proven in other consumer-facing industries, creating a “digital flywheel” effect in a health system is essentially impossible – largely because health system is deeply, entrenched and compulsively dependent on its traditional electronic health records system, said. Andy Chu, senior vice president of product innovation and technology at Providence.

“Any digital experience that requires access to a patient’s medical records is severely limited by the EHR’s legacy architecture and closed system constraints,” he explains. “As a result, generic patient portals like MyChart have become the de facto standard for patients’ digital interactions with their health systems – and these experiences are limited to medical interactions only. patient’s health.

“With 80-90% of health outcomes dependent on factors outside of the medical encounter, this is clearly a problem,” he continued. “To support their communities, health systems have expanded their offerings to include programs, services, and resources that have a positive impact on health outcomes, but cannot be combined these services into the EHR patient portal, and creating and maintaining custom applications is extremely difficult and expensive.” fully reflects the services.”

Praia Health is designed to address these complex barriers to digital transformation.

PROPOSE

The promise is that Praia Health will be able to create a “digital flywheel” for the Providence health system, Chu explains, allowing it to turn its web and mobile apps into a new channel , scalable to provide highly personalized systems.

“The platform is designed to make delivering internal and third-party solutions to consumers practical, scalable and impactful for the health system,” he noted. “Through the capabilities of the Praia Health ecosystem, health systems drive solution awareness and engagement, while reducing acquisition costs.

“We expect this platform to become the foundational technology for our organization’s digital transformation,” he continued. “Enable us to optimize existing patient experiences through digital, promote existing programs, expand services to include new lines of business that are consumer-facing or educate towards self-service support pathways – use case by use case.”

MEETING THE CHALLENGE

The Praia Health Platform is used by Providence’s Digital Innovation Team and the health system’s marketing team to power Providence and Providence Sweden’s web and mobile applications. These logged-in digital experiences allow patients to access their EHR, make appointments, pay bills, and see recommendations for programs, services, and resources that are highly relevant to them.

“The first step in the implementation process is to ‘enhance and migrate’ to Praia Health’s Secure Patient Identification or SPI service,” Chu explains. “After the transition, SPI transparently powers all of the system’s logged digital experiences – including branded web and mobile apps, patient portal apps, and applications created internally or by third parties.

“Once our identities were modernized, Praia Health’s PersonStore enabled us to securely combine consumer identities with consumer data from across the organization and beyond,” he continued. ”. “We then used the Praia Health Platform API to integrate the platform’s capabilities into consumer-facing web and mobile experiences, delivering dynamic and personalized experiences that are open and security, while reflecting the full breadth of our health system.”

With Praia Health, the digital flywheel is driven by adding new capabilities and systems to the platform ecosystem – and the platform supports the integration of every consumer service, program, system , health system-related resources or data sources, whether they are proprietary or accessed through a third party.

“Our first use cases are focused on closing care gaps, financing and payments, and moving toward self-service,” Chu noted. “But now, we are expanding our use cases to digital communication, courses, and classrooms for patients, healthcare centers, clinical research, even health spirituality. The types of use cases we’re adding today have never been possible before Praia Health.”

RESULT

By transitioning the logged in digital experience to the Praia Health platform, Providence has changed the economics of delivering highly customized, personalized systems to patients.

“Before Praia, our development team was able to deliver two or three significant new personalized features through the app,” recalls Chu. “This year we will offer more than 40 products. This new scalability is made possible by the Praia Health Consumer Platform doing ‘upscaling’ with regards to creating features and capabilities new to our sign-in experience.

“Praia Health enables shortcode integration with EHRs with a higher level of security and streamlines integration with digital experiences through the platform’s identity and personalization services,” he continued. . “Additionally, every single use case we deployed showed clear, positive results.”

ADVICE TO OTHERS

Fundamentally, Chu said, health systems are at an inflection point – the trusted link between the health system and its most vulnerable health consumers in an increasingly competitive, fragmented environment. and decentralization.

“Health systems must take a leaf from the book of other consumer-facing industries to enable the digital flywheel that drives operational transformation and business model expansion,” he advised. “Digital transformation is now a health system imperative for both our patients and caregivers.”
