The Speaker of the National Assembly urged not to play the ‘geopolitical game’ with vulnerable people

Csaba Kőrösi, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly, “The lives of troubled people should never be attributed to the tactics of a geopolitical game,” speak.

“Humanitarian action must always be guided by the principles of fairness, neutrality and independence. As such, effective humanitarian assistance can never be held hostage by any political interest,” he added.

Two failed resolutions

The The veto is a special voting right of the Permanent Member States at the Council, whereby if any one of the five permanent members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — votes against, the resolution or decision is automatically invalidated.

On July 11, one Security Council resolution on renewing the cross-border aid distribution mechanism from Türkiye to northern Syria, failure after Russia vetoed the draft. Thirteen of the 15 Council members voted in favor and China abstained.

Also on July 11, a second resolution on extending this mechanism for another six months also failed to apply because it lacks the necessary number of votes. The resolution was submitted by Russia and supported by China. Three member countries (France, Great Britain and the United States) voted against and 10 abstained.

Failure to expand this mechanism has virtually stopped all aid convoys, leaving more than 4.1 million people, mostly women and children, cut off from essential supplies.

The Bab al-Hawa border crossing has been the backbone of relief operations in the region since 2014, handling more than 85% of aid shipments.

Prioritize needs

National Assembly Speaker Csaba Kőrösi called on members of the Security Council to prioritize meeting the needs of affected populations.

“As for the Security Council, I urge you to live with reality and work towards genuine solutions; urgently prioritize long-term cooperation over division; and the humanitarian imperative to the brink of war,” he said.

“Together, we have the power to make a meaningful difference. “The Syrian people are counting on us,” concluded Kőrösi.
