In the One Piece Odyssey story, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates encountered a huge storm at sea and were shipwrecked on a mysterious island called Waford. One Piece Odyssey is a brand new turn-based RPG featuring new characters and monster designs produced by Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece.
At our recent preview event, One Piece Odyssey producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki framed the game’s main theme as “A Tale of Bonds, Revolving around Memories”. It was important for the development team to create an “RPG that allows players to explore and adventure in the world of One Piece”.
Today, we’re excited to share ways that players can strengthen in-game relationships and harness each character’s unique skills as they immerse themselves in the One Piece world that Tsuzuki and the rest of the members created.

combat system
To start, we’ll cover the combat systems in the game and how the unbreakable bonds forged in battle are essential to defeating your enemies.
Tsuzuki: “In action games, it is necessary to focus and understand how to control a character in each battle, in order to get a sense of satisfaction. However, One Piece as IP has a lot of attractive characters already in the “Straw Hats”, so for our players to enjoy the unique appeal of each of them, we used turn-based battle mode as our battle system of choice.
In general, RPG turn-based games require the player to set up all the characters and keys before taking turns. However, One Piece Odyssey takes a different approach.
Tsuzuki: “We adjusted the rock-paper-scissors element as a basic strategy, and randomly positioned the characters into many areas. This is so players can switch between the various registered characters — and challenge them to use each character’s unique abilities and skills to defeat the enemies at hand. The system offers a variety of situations they will face each time, which gives a fresh perspective on the battles they will have to endure along the way.”
During most encounters, the Straw Hats will scramble for different battle zones with the enemy, and up to four crew members will engage the enemy while the rest of the crew stay in reserve. Straw Hats can be called from reserve and can freely change positions as long as they have one action left. The Art of Connecting & Memory Linking
Now, the whole group is strong because everyone has their own strengths. However, this is a bond story and so we encourage all players to tap into the full potential of the game with Bond Arts!
Bond Art is one of the most powerful attacks the Straw Hats can perform. Earlier in the story, the Straw Hats would dive into the world known as Memoria, a world of memories intertwined with those of the Straw Hats, to recover their lost powers. To unlock Bond Arts, players must explore these lost side quests known as Memory Links, found in Memoria, and relive the story of the bond some Straw Hat members share. After completing these Memories Links, the Bond Arts will be unlocked and free to use throughout the game as long as the Straw Hats have the required bond level.
Bond Arts requires a certain bond level to activate, and bond levels can be calculated by fighting together. To initiate a Link Arts attack, all Straw Hats participating in the Linking Arts must be in the participating party, have a high enough bond level, and the starting Straw Hats must also take action.
The sheer power of these attacks makes finding these Memory Links and playing with different Straw Hat formations to maintain some level of bonding.
Tsuzuki: “Bond Arts is one of the examples of the benefits of using different characters and items where you will have the option of more powerful attacks to defeat your enemies. Therefore, we encourage you to try Memory Link to strengthen your team.”
Impressive background
This wouldn’t be One Piece without a bit of drama. We’ve included it in the game as an additional way to level up your team.
Throughout the game, the Dramatic Scene system will randomly provide mid-battle objectives and increase experience, currency, and loot if the goal is reached. Camping & crafting

Usopp, the sniper of the Straw Hats, creates Trick Balls. These trick balls can give a great effect to the whole party or a great bad effect on the enemy.
