Shelters should be a temporary place for dogs to find their forever homes. Sadly, for some puppies, their time in a shelter will last for weeks, months, or even years. The most heartbreaking cases will spend the rest of their lives in kennels, never knowing what it’s like to be in a real home with a loving family. The dogs with the best chance of finding a home are those that are young and healthy. Older dogs are less likely to be adopted, especially those with special needs.
This story of an elderly dog in a Texas shelter is particularly touching. An elderly Chihuahua named Guac was found straying on the streets at the age of 15 and was quickly taken to a Texas shelter. Given her age, it was assumed that she would spend the rest of her days ‘behind bars’. Despite her circumstances, at least Guac was not struggling to survive on her own. She had kind friends to care for her and a glimmer of hope for a brighter future. A glimmer of hope is always better than nothing at all.
Then the unexpected happened: the shelter found the puppy a new home. For a moment, it seemed like everything was going well for Guac. Unfortunately, her joy was short-lived. Just two months after being adopted, Guac was returned to the shelter.
The little dog was heartbroken, and so were the shelter staff. They knew that finding her another home would be extremely difficult. However, the dedicated staff refused to give up on Guac. When the team at The PAWerful Rescue saw Guac’s previous owners return her wrapped in a blanket with no signs of emotion, they were both saddened and angry.
But this act of indifference only strengthened their resolve to ensure Guac had a better future. Their resolve paid off when they connected with a special family in Colorado. After so much heartache, Guac found a loving home with many dog siblings and caring humans, known on Instagram as The Fellowship of the Bean. A video posted by her new mom captures it perfectly.
After picking up Guac in Denver, Colorado, along with other pets, the elderly Chihuahua began his new life. His new mom renamed him Elfie, and from that moment on, Elfie couldn’t stop smiling.
