What’s been happening in California is phenomenal….one of the coolest/wettest late springs in Golden State history. It is caused by an extremely high amplitude and persistent low pressure trough in southern California.
Check out the latest upper-level weather map (500 hPa, approximately 18,000 ft), with shading showing a difference from normal (anomalous). Much lower than normal elevations (a deep trench) concentrated in the southern part of the state (dark blue and purple) Very large in area.
Trench is often associated with clouds, lower-than-normal temperatures, and rainfall. Interestingly, this low pressure in California is directly related to ripples (high pressure) and warm temperatures in southern Canada…and yes, the fires there.
How about this week? Belt…
Through midweek (Wednesday), a weak low center remains south of CA (below)
and the insanely persistent low is still there on Saturday. If you want warmer weather, head to the Pacific Northwest.
Apparently, the weather gods are angry with southern California.
Precipitation? More in California and Nevada over the next few days thanks to a low center in California (see totals through Tuesday morning).

But let alone, the residents of the Northwest are ecstatic, enjoying the vengeance of the weather god on the lotus land of Southern California, The situation is forecast to change radically next Sunday, with a VERY deep, large and unusually low building over the Pacific Northwest. (see below)
A drought if I ever see it, a rain that will bring significant rainfall to the Pacific Northwest and southern BC. And one of them will push the possibility of forest fires in the future further for us.
