Current generation Nissan GT-CHEAP not ready to retire yet, but it will hang the racing helmet on Japanese The Super GT series at the end of the 2021 season. It will be replaced by a track-only development of the new Z that will compete with Acura NSX and Toyota Supra.
Built to GT500 specifications, the race-appropriate Z looks low, wide, and midsize. Style cues like the lights at both ends and the shape of the hood contour creating a visual link between the racing car and the coupe are headed to the showrooms, but Nismo added a look. aggressive tights including vents on the front bumper, a wide diffuser and a large rear wing. Looks like many add-ons are built with carbon fiber for weight control and the Z GT500 rides on Michelin-wrapped central locking wheels Pilot Sports tire.
Nissan Specs haven’t been released yet, but there’s nothing to suggest the GT500 shares anything significant with conventional production Z under the hood has its vents. Race regulations stipulate that teams must use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with a single turbocharger and bolted to a paddle-shifting six-speed transmission. Most of the cars competing in this category produce approximately 650 hp.
For comparison, the Z will land in showrooms as a 2023 model equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 making 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. Six revs the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission, though an automatic unit will also be available.
The Nissan Z GT500 will start racing during the 2022 Super GT season. It will compete with Acura NSX-GT, sold as Honda’s motobike in most markets outside of the US (including Japan) and against one of its most direct competitors: Toyota Supra.
