The Miracle of Christmas: Why Darkside Loves a Good Christmas Box

Clever puzzles, witty dialogue, satirical stories and a heartfelt relationship between a cop and his partner provide the foundation of a good deed. Detective Darkside and that means we try and do something new and exciting for every new case that comes out. From reverse vampire to ghost gangster, Detective Darkside the formula many times would be “take something familiar and make it its head.” That’s why in our first bonus case for The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark, we are back for a second Christmas Box! The ghost of Christmas has passed released December 24, and I thought it might be interesting to dig a little deeper into why we’re going back to Christmas for this first bounty case.

This might require digging a little deeper into that Darkside character! One of the core of Detective Darkside there will always be a certain way of referencing that it tells stories. Detective Darkside assuming you’ve seen the classics. You understand what a vampire is, what a vampire is, the rules behind seeing ghosts, and how Gremlins work. We do a lot of world building work to make sure that Twin Lakes is engaging and unique (usually by taking those concepts and finding things to laugh about) but every Darkside case is will become a classic. It will assume that you are familiar with the culture so that it can then make fun of the culture. Obviously, Darkside isn’t just those things. There are also trivia that help break up the dialogue and add a little game to your detective story. It’s also just the undying friendship between a detective and his beloved best friend. But the world of Darkside will always be the world of creatures, objects, and concoctions that appear in our culture.

That is the first answer to the question: Christmas is widespread in our culture and is good food for satire. For those in need of refreshment, Buy Hard is the first Christmas case Detective Darkside The game focuses on Santa Claus, Krampus and the eternal war between them. Christmas is a pretty big topic. It includes Santa, elves, and the north pole, sure, but it also includes “A Christmas Carol” and “Home Alone.” It includes how we celebrate our families as well as the specifics of gift-giving myths and holiday traditions. And that size benefits a small group of gamedev like ours looking at it and saying, “I have another great idea for a Christmas case!” The ghost of Christmas has passed (more spiritually inspired by Charles Dickens than any other Kris Kringle fable) in this way involves a lot of novelty and perhaps the most complex puzzle in the history of the series.

The second answer is a bit more focused: Christmas also gives us a good opportunity to explore the wider world of Detective Darkside. While creating new mythology and lore for Darkside is always a big focus for any new case, returning to some old locations and meeting older characters helps make Darkside more than just a spoofs or parodies of these types of stories. Darkside has its own world, its own continuity, and its own characters to call back, and like the theme of “A Christmas Carol” is for Scrooge to connect with the people in his life, that’s the basis. It’s a great opportunity for us to connect with some of those extras like Wang, Nigel, Norm Bearson, Gary, Gail, Buzz and Patricia Dooley. What does Pier 13 look like in winter? How much does Wang enjoy his cat-and-mouse relationship with McQueen and Dooley? How cute was Gary and Gail’s meeting? All of those are little stories we can answer as the Christmas case turns around and gets a little more emotional.

In addition, if Detective Darkside reminiscent of an episodic TV show, you just feel it appropriate to have a Christmas special every season, like your favorite sitcoms or sci-fi shows. If all of that swells Detective Darkside What’s your style, I recommend you check it out The ghost of Christmas has passed. If all of that isn’t your style, I suggest you check it out too. Everyone should check it out, really. And feel free to let us know how you feel about the case in our Discord, on Facebook and Twitter on December 24th, after you play!
