Lexus dropped a brand’s first full-blown introductory video tram Sold in the US Called the Lexus RZ, it has the angular styling we’ve come to expect Toyota’s luxury brand, but underneath the sheet metal we might be getting a background that we’ve seen quite a bit in recent weeks.
That’s because the Lexus RZ is the third version of the battery-electric intersection Co-developed by Toyota and Subaru, was recently announced with a confusing name Toyota bZ4X (it always requires double checking of alphanumeric strings) and names are much better Subaru Solterra.
All three are built on the e-TNGA platform that will underpin several EV models. However, the Lexus RZ signals a more significant departure from the bZ4X and Solterra, whose differences are rather limited. They look almost indistinguishable, the only things that set them apart are the slight reshaping of the front and rear fenders, painted wheel arch panels on Toyota, and an option for an all-wheel drive system. 2WD single engine on bZ4X.
On the other hand, Lexus seems to be wearing a completely new metal plate. Immediately, the absence of gray cladding around the wheel wells is obvious. It still looks like there are still some, but much thinner than bZ4X and Solterra. A strong line of lettering flows from the top edge of the front wheel arches to the rear doors, where it is picked up by another upturned line of lettering resulting in a blacked-out C-pillar.
Naturally, the front gets the shape of a large Lexus spindle grille (there doesn’t appear to be an actual open air intake, which is not necessary for an EV) and unique headlights branded “L” DRLs in the shape of a hook. The rear also offers a much sleeker appearance, with slim taillights that don’t hang over the body. A monolithic light bar with the word “Lexus” printed horizontally instead of the traditional L logo.
No interior details or images have been revealed, but we’re guessing that the cabin is quite a bit nicer than the chic yet modern cockpits of the bZ4X and Solterra. Lexus has stated that it will not offer a single engine option. However, it Direct4 . all-wheel drive system is a departure from Subaru, and the Lexus is said to have 402 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers completely blew bZ4X and Solterra out of the water.
RZ is expected to officially launch in the first half of 2022.
