The incredible Greenland picture battle between a wide angle and a telephoto lens

Iceland may be the standard dream destination of many photographers, but have you thought about Greenland? It’s absolutely amazing, and after seeing this, I challenge you to disagree. But if you’re going there to capture icebergs, craggy mountains, and turquoise waters, should you use a wide-angle or telephoto lens?

Different locations tend to go through phases as popularity grows, and for the past decade or so, Iceland has certainly been at the top of most photographers’ composite list. And it’s easy to see why, with incredible landscapes, otherworldly mountains and waterfalls, and mystical mists that often give images a magical feel. But honestly, it’s getting to the stage where it’s almost impossible to get a unique shot or a unique creation, like Santorini, in Greece, and the blue-domed churches there. So, what could be the next great destination to really take off?

That brings us to this amazing video by Chris Hau, in which he travels to Greenland with another famous photographer, Benjamin Hardman. Hardman has pretty much spent his entire photography career with long telephoto lenses, so he and Hau decide to have a photo battle: Hau uses the wide-angle lens and Hardman uses the wide-angle lens. Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 telephoto lens. Both are using Sony a7R IV Camera. Normally, when most people take travel photos, they think of shooting as wide as possible to capture as many frames as possible, but after seeing Hardman’s work with a telephoto lens, you might consider how to take pictures. Regardless of whose image you think is better, the real winner here is Greenland. What do you think?
