The winner of the off-court version of the American Oaks (G1) 2021 at the end of last season, the chubby 4-year-old Empire Maker came on with a 2-1 favorite in a field of 10 fillings and mares , ages 3 and up, for Frankel 1 1/8 mile. Hall of Famer John Velazquez was first called on board the Queen Goddess, and the two got along perfectly after a good pass from the 9th hole. “Michael and I talked before the race and it looked like only one other horse could take the lead, so I decided to run out to make sure she was in the lead and then we could put her if she feels comfortable,” Velazquez said. “She was able to control the race by taking the lead the first time with the rope. At that point, she did very well. Going to the far corner, she switched to the side lead. left and she just went. I said, ‘Okay mom, let’s go!'”
The closing speech was kept in second place, while Quattroelle made a light rally to finish third.
Bred in Kentucky by the Thoroughbred Tolo, the Queen Goddess improved her record to 5-2-1 in 10 starts, with a run of $470,580. She first raced for her breeder and then lobbied that entity with Eclipse Purebred Partners over eight starts before Gary Barber acquired Tolo.
The Goddess Queen is the first pony in the Royal Tale of the Lemon Drop Kid mare to be wagered, from the family of the level 1 winner Perseverance. Royal Story’s last reported pony is a 2-year-old puppy that has not been controlled by Mendelssohn called Consort Royal sold for the equivalent of $277,208 to Daithi Harvey/Highland Yard from Hotellerie’s shipment for Arqana’s annual August Promotion last year.
