A new game for those who’ve hosted a Bad Movie Night or two is coming out in the next few months. The pro moviegoers at RiffTrax are launching their own game with What is this ?! studio Wide Right Interactive on May 5, 2022.
RiffTrax: Games will feel quite familiar to those who enjoy retelling their films. If you’re not familiar, RiffTrax — and its spiritual predecessor Mystery Science Theater 3000—Intriguing low-budget films where actors will chat and make jokes about events on the screen.
This RiffTrax the game seems to be using a similar setup, where the player can channel their own powers into the space of bad cinema. Wide Right created a similar setting with What is this ?!, a party game in which players are voiced in new lines for the movie. The RiffTrax The game is using some of the same technology, with a few new ones.
Players can write their own riffs or choose from a selection of riffs written by RiffTrax team. Judging by the trailer, these quotes appear to be voiced by the RiffTrax folks, so it’s a neat little addition. There will be over 250 clips, including some classics like Plan 9 from outer space.
Wide Right Interactive confirmed there will be remote and cross-play games, as well as Twitch chat integration. RiffTrax: Games also use a Jackbox Set up a style controller, where any internet-connected device can access and play with. So yes, use your phone, tablet or anything else that can take it to the world wide web.
Like someone practically raised MST3K, this will probably be a solid padlock for some future parties. We’ll see who’s the spoiler on May 5th, when RiffTrax: Games coming on Switch, PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Those last two platforms are also compatible with next-generation consoles.
