When was Las Vegas founded?
Let’s take you back to 1905, when Nevada was founded after the opening of a railroad which linked Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Railroads were crucial in the development of America, as they allowed homesteaders to travel across the States and develop cities.
With this, came a lot of work, including the building of the Hoover Dam. This created an influx of male workers travelling to Nevada. When they had new work, they would bring their families to the area – despite it usually just being a desert. Once infrastructure began, the workers needed somewhere they could let off steam after work – this is where casinos come in!
Casinos, theatres, saloons and hotels were built in the new city of, Las Vegas. It was originally known for its springs, but this was soon overridden by the popularity of the entertainment the city had to offer, with people traveling far to experience the Vegas casino scene.
A surge in popularity
Starting in the mid-1980s, a period of unprecedented growth began. The annual population increased by nearly 70%, almost doubling between 1985 and 1995! With more people calling Las Vegas their home, came more industrialisation.
In 2007, the area known as the Fremont East Entertainment District opened. As part of its downtown revitalisation efforts, the city’s Redevelopment Agency contributed funds to this renovation in an effort to attract additional non-gaming nightclubs, cocktail lounges and entertainment hot spots to the area.
What is Las Vegas most known for?
Vegas is not just known for its gambling scene; it’s commonly known to be the ideal location to tie the knot… without the long waiting list.
From the early 1900s Nevada was known as a place where unhappy couples could get a relatively quick divorce. Las Vegas embraced the concept of an even quicker marriage. So, the Strip’s first wedding chapel, the Little Church of the West, opened in 1942, and has since been the place to go if you are wanting to get married – the quick way.
‘The Strip’, was the section of the highway which became home to multiple hotel-casinos, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues. An eight-mile stretch of neon lights and elaborate fountains, the Strip delivers a wow-factor. You can find Cesars Palace on the Boulevard, one of the most famous buildings, and an iconic land mark for tourists visiting the city.
Tourism
Speaking of tourism, Vegas – one of the entertainment capitals of the world – sees millions of tourists per year. In 2019, over 40 million visitors came to see the bright lights of Sin City!
More people visiting, means even more entertainment and places to stay. In 2021, it was recorded that there were over 150,000 hotel rooms in the city!
