Peak’s system is similar to many other handlebar mounts on the market, using a proprietary clamp bar, swivel, and phone case, but this mount shines in the execution. Nearly the entire assembly is made from fine machined aluminum, and the swivel joints use meshing teeth to provide 24 different positions the mount can be locked into. Installation is like any other bar attachment and the single bolt bar clamp takes only a minute to install.
One thing you must know about this stand is how simple the mechanism is. It uses a combination of neodymium magnets and mechanical locking tabs to secure the phone. All you have to do is place your phone against the mount and apply a light force, and boom, the phone is locked in. Squeeze a button on the side of the mount and the locking tabs will release the phone. Of all the motorcycle phone mounts I’ve used, this mechanism is by far the easiest and fastest, and I’ve never doubted its grip on my iPhone.
Phone cases can be problematic with these types of stands, because do you really want to change your phone case every once in a while? The Peak Design case isn’t bad, though. It looks like any other case you could use and offers ample protection. It also works with most famous MagSafe chargers. The cover of the locking mechanism is completely non-intrusive, and you can add a ring on the back or upgrade to a tougher polycarbonate case.
Peak Design’s stand is almost perfect, but I wish the built-in shock absorbers were a bit tighter. It just feels a little loose, but this really doesn’t matter much when you’re driving and overall, I’m glad the vibration dampers come standard.

Freakmount ADV bikes look good with additional functional accessories, but for many customs vehicles and cruisers, a motorcycle phone holder isn’t exactly an aesthetically pleasing addition. Designed to be unobtrusive and simple, Freakmount is a sweet little spring clamp that can attach to your gas tank with super strong magnets.
Right out of the box, Freakmount is a pretty sweet product. The whole is billet aluminum, and the spring mechanism is sturdy. Six N52 neodymium magnets are housed in the circular mounting surface on the back of the Freakmount, and these are powerful! Just pull out the spring-loaded clip and slide your phone in. Put the phone on the case and you’re in business.
I know, you’re suspecting a magnet holding a $900 phone to your gas tank, and so am I. Be sure ‘Track my iPhone‘ is on, isn’t it? But I can assure you, this mount has won my trust. Stuck on a Sports tank, I hit the roughest roads you’d want to run on street tires, hit triple-digit speeds and threw every nimble maneuver I could into the tank. this mount, and it never budges.
After reading some reviews where people suggested the Freakmount was shifting or spinning while driving, I applied some reference marks on the artist’s tape and tried to figure out the limit. I moved the stand away from the center of the phone and even placed it on the rounder parts of the tank and had no problems. I thought I would prevail by hitting a lane with Freakmount taped to the side of my TW200 gas tank. But even then, it was held.
The only thing I wonder about Freakmount is vibration. The mount doesn’t suffer from damping like Quad Lock or Peak Design, and vibration can kill the camera on certain phones. sport I used the rubber-mounted motorized Freakmount and it was a pretty tame ride. That being said, I couldn’t find any cases with Freakmount and my iPhone is perfectly fine.
Naturally, there are a few things you want to consider before hitting ‘add to cart’. Needless to say, this mount is clearly not for you if your gas tank is made of non-ferrous materials. Plastic, titanium and aluminum fuel tanks do not apply. It’s probably best to have some flat surface on your tank to place this on, and preferably somewhere easy to see. Also, if you care about your paint finish, you’ll want to keep both surfaces clean to prevent scratches.
Freakmount won me over, and it’s great for anyone with a Harley-Davidson or other steel barrel cruiser who doesn’t want to mess around with an unsightly mount. After you unbox it, I’ll add a threaded locking pad where the spacer attaches to the clamp, just in case, and on to the road. Quad Lock handlebar mount Quad Locks have been around for years and their simple and sturdy stand can be used on anything from motorcycles, cars, fishing boats, golf bags and even your helicopter. That’s a worthy quality for a system that forces you to use a proprietary, black-only phone case.
The heart of the Quad Lock is a circular two-stage locking mechanism with the receiver integrated in the phone case. Locking it in is a tap and rotate operation, and erasing is the opposite when pressing a lock tab.
Quad Lock standard handlebar mount made from glass filled nylon, actually plastic, but it’s a solid piece. I have dropped my Honda 450 at least 10 times in Moab, Utah, with my phone in standard Quad Lock mode and have had no problems. If you don’t like plastic, you can upgrade to the Pro model, which is made from CNC-cut aluminum.
Quad Lock is one of the more secure options on the market in my opinion, but there are some other big advantages to this mounting in the real world. First, it’s super universal and works with all of Quad’s other sports and lifestyle products. It’s great that you can modify it with other details and pieces in different colors, and the weather-resistant phone poncho gives me peace of mind when driving in rain and dust.
If you are purchasing a Quad Lock, you NEED to add a vibration damper to your order. Equipped with a rubber isolator, it prevents vibrations from damaging the phone’s camera and is the best shock absorber I’ve ever used. It feels solid and doesn’t wobble, and I wish Quad would make it a standard part of the stand. If you don’t add a vibration dampener, you’ll most likely damage your iPhone—check a small number of one-star reviews for proof.
My only negative with Quad Lock is that the mechanism is a bit more erratic than the others. If you do not place the phone perpendicular to the holder, the phone will not screw in place. Twisting motion can also get in the way of the cables on your bars, and my phone always hits my front brake line when I plug it back in. And if you really want to separate your hair, the side of the buckle is just a bulky strand of hair.
Most of the things that I don’t like about the mount can be attributed to its level of security, and for this motorcycle phone holder, that’s the bottom line. While it’s not as quick to use as other mounts, it’s the one I’m using for riding on dual sport motorcycles and ADV bikes.
