Tesla Cybertruck’s slippery pedals recalled due to soap
Tesla issued one recall for every Cybertruck built to dateas The sale suspension lasted nearly a weekand that’s something that can’t be solved with an over-the-air update. Apparently the assembly line workers used plain soap to put the truck’s gas pedal on the pedal, and the residual soap caused the pad to slip off and jam when the throttle was wide open. Luckily, the truck slowed down when you pressed the brake pedal so hopefully there weren’t any injuries caused by this incident. Regardless, Tesla is currently trying to figure out how to fix the pedal slippage, so far. includes taping the cover with additional hardware.
The cause of the problem, as Tesla described to NHTSA:
An unapproved change introduced a lubricant (soap) to aid in the assembly of the pad components to the accelerator pedal. Residual lubricant reduces the pad’s ability to grip the pedal.
Who among us could have predicted such a problem?
Going back to the drawing board, Tesla said it will “at no cost to customers,” replace the accelerator pedal “so that the assembly meets specifications and ensures sufficient holding force between the pedal and the accelerator to prevent the pedal from coming off.”
Based on Autopian, Tesla’s fix appears to be to simply attach the pedal pads to the pedals with rivets. This isn’t the first time Tesla has gone simple went to the hardware store to have the car repaired before delivery. It seems pretty par for the course Consider the company that builds cars in a tent.
However, Tesla said it is not aware of any accidents caused by a slipping accelerator pedal. It might help explain some.
