Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr. talk, agree to split the purse

A potential super battle between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. is said to be unfinished.

ESPN is reporting that the welterweight title holders contacted directly by phone – without the involvement of promoters, managers and networks – and agreed on a pay split. undisclosed.

Crawford then sent what is known as a “memorandum of understanding” to Premier Boxing Champions, the company that manages Spence.

No potential date or site has been reported.

Spence negotiated to defend his 147-pound title against former belt holder Keith Thurman in April, though that deal has yet to be finalized.

And the WBO ordered Crawford, the champion, to take on No. 1 rival Alexis Rocha. It is unclear whether handlers Crawford and Rocha have opened negotiations.

If Crawford and Spence can come to an agreement, perhaps they will meet after the ongoing battles.

They are said to have come to an agreement for a match last November. However, negotiations broke down before the contract was signed and the boxers continued.

Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs) finished defensively against a tough opponent, but overcame David Avanesyan in December. He stopped the challenger in the sixth round.

Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) hasn’t competed since knocking out Yordenis Ugas in 10 rounds in a title unification match last April.

The bout was compared to other heavyweight clashes because of the boxers’ status. Crawford tops Boxing Junkie’s pound list, Spence is fourth.

However, it was difficult to make the fight because the principals were aligned with the competition handlers, Crawford with Top Rated and Spence with PBC.

Crawford split from Top Rated late last year, which opened up a broader path to a deal.
