After months of back-and-forth, lengthy preparations, and a long list of external delays that are now irrelevant, both Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos Jr. has now been officially resolved.
With only balancing their etiquette in their highly anticipated contest, no man appeared to struggle on the scales.
As his temper continued to flare throughout the week, Kambosos Jr took the first step to the podium. The Australian-born player smiled slyly as his team and supporters cheered loudly. A little while later, it was announced that he officially weighed 134.4 pounds.
A topless Kambosos Jr paced back and forth as he waited for Lopez to come on stage. Although the Lopez team has repeatedly stated that 135 is extremely difficult to make, the unified lightweight title list seems to be fine on the scale. He stood upright while contorting when it was announced that he weighed 135 pounds at the nose.
For both sides, their contest again, again is finally over. After winning the IBF, WBO, WBA and WBC Franchise titles in his unification match against Vasyl Lomachenko late last year, Lopez was sidelined. The New York-born boy has long hoped to return to the ring one day. By all accounts, Lopez was ready to do just that.
Initially, the unified lightweight champion and Kambosos Jr were on the verge of going head-to-head a few months ago under the leadership of advertising agency Triller, who won the bid with an offer of more than $6 million. However, this matchup will suffer from some delays due to a combination of COVID-19 and unprecedented backlash as Triller tries to avoid competition in the form of NFL football and other sports.
Thanks to the utter uncertainty of events, Triller was found insolvent. From there, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom have been given the rights to their contest, which will now take place this Saturday night at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
