India’s Tejaswin Shankar won bronze in the men’s high jump final with a record of 2.22m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham on Wednesday. The 23-year-old won the nation’s first track and field medal in the men’s high jump. World Championships bronze medalist Hamish Kerr took the gold in the 2.25m and overcame defending champion Brandon Starc from Australia with fewer fouls.

India’s Shankar started with a successful 2.10m jump on his first attempt. Shankar made a smooth jump over the 2.15m obstacle with complete ease on his first try.

Shankar made an impressive 2.19m jump. Throughout the game, Shankar had no trouble getting over the crossbar again with a 2.22m jump on his first attempt.

However, the Indian high jumper failed to get over the crossbar on his first attempt at the 2.25m hurdles and neither on his second attempt. He decided to miss 2.25m for the third time and went straight to 2.28m but failed. With failed attempts, he had to win a bronze medal at Birmingham 2022.

Former world champion and CWG Donald Thomas from the Bahamas drew with Tejaswin Shankar in 2.22m but the Indian runner won bronze for fewer fouls.
