Taysom Hill Injury Update: Holy QB handles mallet finger; without surgery, the report said

Saints defender Taysom Hill injured the finger on his pitching hand Thursday night when that hand struck the arm of a Cowboys defender. He played the rest of the game, which the Saints ultimately lost 27-17.

On Friday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Hill suffered a mallet finger injury similar to the one Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson suffered earlier this season.

Hill made his first game of the season at quarterback for New Orleans on Thursday. He sealed the score 3-1 at the start of last season in place of the injured Drew Brees.

Hill had previously faced a concussion and a leg injury this year. Here’s what you need to know about his current injury.

What is a mallet finger?

Mallet finger injuries are not common in football, but Russell Wilson has picked up one in Week 5 of this season. According to Summit Orthopedics, mallet finger is a finger joint injury that occurs when an object hits the finger, thereby tearing the tendon on the tip (or nail surface) of the finger. A person cannot straighten a finger when this happens, and so the finger is bent like a mallet.

THAN: What is Russell Wilson’s injury?

Not all mallet finger injuries require surgery, and it seems unlikely that Hill will. To cure mallet finger, the finger needs to be kept straight 24 hours a day, this is usually done through the use of a splint. It usually takes a few weeks for the finger to completely straighten.

THAN: Wilson said he spends ’19 to 20 hours a day’ fixing the injury on his finger

Wilson missed three games because of his injury.

Taysom Hill coming out in Week 14?

There is no confirmation on Hill’s return date, but it looks like he will play after his injury. The Saints’ next game is until Sunday, December 12, when they play Jets on the Road. This left Hill more than a week to treat the injury.
