Taylor Swift sends flowers to Don McLean after song breaks record held by ‘American Pie’
The singer sent flowers to Don McLean, whose song “American Pie” first set the record when it hit #1 in 1972, with a running time of about 8 minutes 37 seconds. The new version of “All Too Well,” part of Swift’s 2012 album “Red” re-release, hit just over 10 minutes.
In a letter to McLean, Swift wrote about the singer’s impact on her music.
“I will never forget that I am standing on the shoulders of giants,” Swift wrote. “Your music is very important to me. Sending love from the person who wrote the LONG SONG to others.”
“There is something to be said about a great song that has lasting power,” says McLean. “American Pie” has remained at its peak for 50 years, and now Taylor Swift has claimed such a historic work of art. Let’s face it, no one wants to lose that #1 spot, but if I had to lose it to someone, I’d definitely be happy that it was another great singer/songwriter like Taylor. ”
